Proxemic Media — a Durham-based arts consulting organization — wants you to get closer to the art. You have the gallery walk, where Pleiades Arts, the Durham Art Guild and others offer a great visual art experience. Don’t you want to add modern dance to that?

Proxemic, founded by Myra Weise, will bring dance to the Third Friday Durham Art Walk starting this week. Performances will be held in or around Empower Dance Studio on Parrish St. and run every month through November.

Weise’s organization was supposed to debut the series last month, but a few of the Third Friday events were postponed because of a rumored KKK march.

This month, Proxemic will showcase one of the dance companies scheduled for August, along with the two that were scheduled for this week. RSVP on Facebook.

Weise offered up three reasons to attend the dance series

  1. Go beyond the bar and barre! Experience a curated program of the wide range of styles of work being made by local choreographers.
  2. The city of medicine is a city of artists. From musicians busking on the street corners to galleries staying open late, Proxemic Media is adding dance to the scene to showcase the work currently being made in our area.
  3. View excerpts of new works. Two of the three performances will give viewers a taste of what’s to come in their full-length productions in December and March.

Here’s the scoop on who will perform and when

8:30 p.m. (durham) will perform “‘and what about this’ and other false starts,” exploring the self-criticism and self-doubt that exists within the echo chamber of a solo creative process.

8:45 p.m. ShaLeigh Dance Works will perform an excerpt of “I Promise,” drawing on the imagery of rioting and rebellion to question how we define our tribe, what connects us and what separates us. The full-length work will be presented in December 2017 as part of the DIDA 2017 season.

9 p.m. Ginger Wagg & Wild Actions will perform an excerpt of “Frivolous Artist,” a full-length show that will be presented in March 2018 as part of the DIDA 2017 season.
