Legal knowledge can often elude artists. Questions abound, from the technical (“How do I copyright?”) to the inevitable (“What happens to all the art I’ve made or collected when I pass on?”). Attorneys can be a true resource for gaining clarity, but they aren’t always at hand.

On Wednesday, Oct. 25, the Durham Art Guild is hosting the “Legal Aspects of Art: Copyright and Estate Planning for Artists” presentation to help shed light. NC-based attorneys Mavis Gragg and Vedia Jones-Richardson will speak on the ins-and-outs of copyright law and managing an artist’s estate. If you’re an artist or an art collector curious about intellectual property and artist’s estate planning, this event is for you! After their presentations, Gragg and Jones-Richardson will answer your questions.

This two-hour, lawyer-led presentation costs $5 for non-DAG members and a suggested donation of $3 for DAG members. Take advantage of capturing this detailed information at this discounted price by registering here.

About the speakers

Mavis Gragg is an attorney, art collector and art enthusiast based in Durham. A solo legal practitioner dealing with death and dirt, Mavis loves to mediate conversation between art and the art consumer. Mavis got her start as a mediator of art in 2012 when she became a volunteer docent at the prestigious Corcoran Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C. Now, she enjoys hosting art salons in the Bull City and visiting galleries. Gragg also serves as a member of the CAMnow advisory board at Contemporary Art Museum in Raleigh and a member of the Triangle Artworks + Law Committee.

Vedia Jones-Richardson is a principal attorney at Olive & Olive PA and heads the Trademark/Copyright Practice Group. She specializes in trademark, copyright, technology, marketing/promotions, entertainment and arts law.
