If you’re not making a mass exodus to the coast to toast America, there’s plenty of fun to take in around town to celebrate summer and the day Will Smith saved us from the aliens … assuming you leave the pool deck and don’t melt to death doing so.

Independence Day Block Party

Nothing screams freedom like a brewery bookended block party with good ole American (local) brews. Celebrate lady liberty and your American pride at the Independence Day Block Party between Neuse River Brewing Company and Nickelpoint Brewing Co., featuring local vendors, two live bands, food trucks, epic contests and all kinds of American fun. The event benefits cause for paws. Double win. Sunday, noon to 8 p.m.

The purple Prince and King of Pop collide at an event honoring both music icons at The Pour House (Sat., 8 p.m.), where Asheville-based soul-driven dance rock band The Fritz plays the music of Michael Jackson and Prince.

Kayak and Craft Beer Tour

Basking in the sun on the Haw River with an end goal of a craft beer flight? Paddle perfection. The Kayak and Craft Beer Tour (Saturday, 9:45 a.m.) starts with a one-hour self-guided paddle (tandem kayak, canoe, single kayak or SUP) down the Haw, provided by Haw River Canoe & Kayak Co. Post-float, the TTT awaits to roll you to lunch from Saxapahaw General Store, followed by two breweries (Haw River Farmhouse Ales and Beer Study/ Starpoint Brewing), with tastings included at each, as well as a behind the scenes brewery tour at Haw River Farmhouse Ales. Cheers.

Plants and Pollinators

Surely there’s no place you’d rather “bee” than buzzing through the garden for the so-named Plants and Pollinators event Sunday (2-3 p.m.) at the North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences, featuring a tour of the Nature Neighborhood Garden to find flowers and insects and determine which plants can grow locally to help butterflies and other insects. Open to all ages; bring water bottle; dress for weather and wear close-toed shoes. Meet at front gate near kiosk for tour.
